2026 Kofi in Courage Award
Two laureates who symbolize courage, and a guest of honor who is a moral conscience of America, Professor Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Economist, to mark World Press Freedom Day.

The 2026 Kofi Annan Courage in Cartooning Award honors two powerful examples of courage and humanity: cartoonists Jimmy “Spire” Ssentongo of Uganda and Safaa Odah from Gaza, Palestine. They were honoured on May 4, 2026 by the Freedom Cartoonists Foundation and the City of Geneva, in the absence of the Palestinian artist. During a live video call from Gaza, the Geneva audience gave her a standing ovation.”

As part of the ceremony, Professor Joseph Stiglitz, 2001 Nobel Prize winner in Economics, delivered a speech on academic freedom and press freedom, followed by a discussion with Kenneth Roth, former director of Human Rights Watch, on the state of American democracy six months before the midterm elections.
